Richard Edwin Saeger (born March 4, 1964) is an American former competitive swimmer and US Olympic Gold Medalist in 1984. He currently resides in Irvine, California with his family including his wife Tanya and daughter Kendall and son Cole. Saeger earned his undergraduate degree at SMU and later earned his MBA at USC in 1999 with an emphasis in Corporate Finance. He currently is an original investor in California Republic Bank a 2 Billion bank based in Irvine, California.
Born in Rochester, NY, Saeger was from a family of swimmers including father Edwin and Brother Bob. Saeger competed for Penfield High School and in his freshman and sophomore years won 5 state swimming titles and broke 4 state records. Saeger then enrolled at Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania and broke 4 National prep school records and led Mercersburg to the national prep school team championship. Saeger then accepted a full scholarship to Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas and was a 4-year All-American and earned his BBA in finance.
Saeger also won a gold medal in the 1982 World Championships in Ecuador and ended that year (1982) ranked third in the World in the 200 meter free. Saeger also won a gold medal in the 1983 Pan American Games in Venezuela and broke the World Record in the prelims of the 1984 Olympic Games in the 800 free relay.
Saeger has stayed active in Masters Competitions and has broken 11 Masters World records in multiple age groups. In 2006, Saeger won 5 World Masters Swimming titles at the World Championships at Stanford University in the 40-44 age group. That year, Saeger was Honorable Mention for the World Masters Swimmer of the Year award.
